Erin 2009 Erin Burkett

When did you graduate from HHS and where did you go from here?

I graduated from HHS in 2009.  After graduation, I went to Western Michigan University and majored in special education with a minor in elementary mathematics.  While at WMU, I worked as a campus tour guide.  For my student teaching, I studied abroad in England and taught on an American Air Force base for a semester.  During my time in England I was able to travel all over Europe.  Once I graduated from WMU, I stayed in the Kalamazoo area and started teaching special education at Parchment High School (PHS).  I am currently completing my fourth year at PHS.

Can you tell us a little bit about the company you work for?

Parchment is a small town north of Kalamazoo.  PHS is a class B school and is similar in size to HHS.

What does your work day look like?

At PHS, I teach 9th-12th grade special education students in reading, writing, and math.  I support their academic needs in their general education classes, as well as teach life skills that will allow them to be independent after high school.  After school, my day is far from over.  I enjoy coaching basketball and softball, as well as being involved in student activities.  I am a sophomore class advisor and the co-advisor for National Honor Society.

Can you tell us what your time at HHS was like?

While at HHS, I played softball, basketball, volleyball and golf.  I went to any athletic events I could to support my fellow Hornets.  My participation in Cadet Teaching helped me realize that I wanted to become a special education teacher.  I was placed at Greenfield School for a semester and absolutely loved it!

Is there a teacher who had a significant impact on your life?

Mrs. Derenzy was such a kind, caring and sweet teacher.  I had her for freshman English and journalism and she was also our class advisor.  I knew that I could go to her for anything.  She is a teacher that I strive to be like in my own classroom.

Advice for current students?

See the world!  There is so much out there to be discovered outside of Hillsdale, MI.  Take a chance and go on a spontaneous trip or select a job/college that is far from home.  Be open to new ideas and meeting new people.
