When did you graduate from HHS and where did you go from here?

I graduated from HHS in 2009 and ventured off to the University of Michigan to pursue my bachelor’s degree (Go Blue!). While at U of M, I focused my studies on Political Science but pursued my passion in business as a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed business fraternity.

Upon graduating with my bachelors in political science, I moved to Metro Detroit and started classes at Wayne State University’s evening law school program. I worked full-time at a boutique law firm and attended classes at night. Life was beyond hectic for a solid four years, but I graduated this past May and sat for the Michigan Bar Exam in July. After successfully passing the Michigan Bar in October, my husband and I moved to Battle Creek to pursue our careers and be closer to family.

Can you tell us a little bit about the company you work for?
I recently joined a financial advising practice in Battle Creek where I help clients manage their investment, retirement, and estate planning needs.

What does your workday look like?
My average workday varies, but you can most likely find me sitting with clients, attending meetings in the community, or designing/preparing presentation materials for clients. My workdays are very fast paced, but extremely rewarding.

Can you tell us what your time at HHS was like?
My time at HHS was amazing. I was involved with sports, participated in student council, and was a member of the yearbook staff. Those four years were very memorable and made a huge impact on the person I am today.

How did your time at HHS help you now?
I have used my knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, and even Word in more ways that I can count. My marketing skills were extremely valuable to every employer I have been with. In fact, I made a good income in freelance marketing throughout undergrad and grad school. There is a huge demand for those skills even outside of the marketing industry.

Is there a teacher who had a significant impact on your life?
Mrs. Boyd (Eggleston) and Mrs. Goldsmith – the Hornets are blessed to have teachers who care so much about the success of their students.

Advice for current students?

It’s okay to not know what you’re doing with your life! Heck, I still don’t know for certain what I want to do and I’m eight years out of high school. Take the unpaid internships, job shadow someone in your field of interest, and most importantly, NEVER lose sight of your biggest dreams. Most professionals are happy to help out the eager youth, so ask to spend a day in their shoes.
