HORNETS PERFORM WELL IN FIRST-EVER ONLINE REGIONAL EVENT
From January 6-13, 2021,the Hillsdale High School Business Professionals of America Club participated in the first-ever online regional competitive events competition with Region 2 of Michigan BPA. The competition allowed our students to demonstrate their talents in various fields of business and industry. Michigan BPA offered 407 contests in 9 regions, with a total of 2,189 total student registrants statewide, with an average of 243 registrants/region. Fifty students from HHS participated in the event netting 24 Regional Champions, 47 top three placings, and 73 students finishing in the top ten! Thirty-five of our members qualified for the state competition in 56 different events. Sixteen of those qualified in two or more events.
Six individuals and four teams grabbed the regional championship title for 2021. For the third year in a row, Ella Springer ‘21, was crowned regional champion in the Graphic Design event. Other individual champions include Rylie Dietz in Administrative Support Research Project, Xander Sallows in Entrepreneurship, Jack Granata in Spreadsheet Applications, Stella McCourry in Intermediate Word Processing, and John Maier in Parliamentary Procedure Concepts. Winning teams included the Administrative Support Team of Brylee Boyd, Jack Granata, Sarah Korn, and Grace Shreffler, the Computer Animation Team of Austin Hall, Kaigan Keeney, Jonah Richards, and Benjamin Taylor, the Parliamentary Procedure Team of Hannah Baker, Carson Cooley, Melanie Foust, Addison Hoffman, John Maier, Annemarie Moore, Bryan Springer, and Grace Vondra, and the Video Production Team of Peter Moore and Karsyn Stebbins.
Earning second place medals included the Website Design Team of Cooper Eggleston, Rylie Dietz, Maya Hall, and Xander Sallows, Maya Hall in Administrative Support Research Project, Melanie Foust in Advanced Interview Skills and Parliamentary Procedure Concepts, Grace Shreffler in Advanced Word Processing, John Maier in Economic Research Project Individual, Carson Cooley in Extemporaneous Speech, Hannah Baker in Desktop Publishing, Brylee Boyd in Graphic Design, and Amelia Dietz in Prepared Speech.
Several students earned third place medals including Shae Arnold in Administrative Support Research Project, Hailey Granata in Advanced Interview Skills, Sarah Korn in Advanced Word Processing, Megan Rufenacht in Basic Office Systems and Procedures, Grace Vondra in Extemporaneous Speech and Parliamentary Procedure Concepts, Makaiha Donahue in Financial Math, Karsyn Stebbins in Desktop Publishing, Stella McCourry in Personal Financial Management, and Sarah Shafer in Prepared Speech.
Other state qualifiers include Karissa Manifold, 4th place Advanced Word Processing, Carson Cooley 4th Place Parliamentary Procedure Concepts, Kylee Hassenzahl 4th place Desktop Publishing, Olivia Gendron 4th place Graphic Design, Hannah Baker 4th place Parliamentary Procedure Concepts, Cody Sprunger 5th place Banking and Finance, Kyleigh LaFollette 5th place Basic Office Systems and Procedures, 5th place Hailey Granata Human Resource Management, and Makaiha Donahue 5th place Personal Financial Management.
The Diplomat Torch Award requires 30 points in each Torch category: leadership, service, cooperation, knowledge, friendship, patriotism, and love, hope, faith. A Diplomat is defined as "one skilled with tact in dealing with people." Hillsdale High School had six students earn the Diplomat Torch Award. Congratulations to Brylee Boyd, Hailey Granata, Sarah Korn, Karissa Manifold, Leah Reiniche, and Grace Shreffler.
The Hornets are anxiously waiting to hear if they will be able to travel to compete in-person for the state competition or if they will have to compete again in a virtual format. The Hillsdale High School BPA team is coached by Lauren Cornett, Mindy Eggleston, and Sarah Sutliff.
