BPA National Leadership Conference Results 2021

    Business Professionals of America Chapter
    Attending National Leadership Conference

Business Professionals of America is a dynamic youth organization which provides leadership and business opportunities for middle school and high school students to prepare them for their future careers.  The skills that students learn through participating in a variety of business experiences are beneficial and will help prepare students for a career in the workforce.

The National Leadership Conference took place virtually from April 26-May 8, 2021; over 6,000 students across the nation participated.  At this conference, students participated in business related events and competed for the top spots.  Hillsdale Community Schools had a total of 28 students who placed in the top ten of the nation!

Fourteen Hornets competed at the high school level with six of those placing in the top ten.  Senior Ella Springer placed third in the Graphic Design competition and Grace Shreffler placed fourth in Advanced Word Processing.  The Computer Animation Team of Austin Hall ‘22, Kaigan Keeney ‘24, Jonah Richards ‘22, and Ben Taylor ‘22, placed 7th overall.

Twenty-one Hornets competed at the middle school level with all 21 placing in the top ten and eighth grader Kate Nolan placing in the top ten in two different categories for a total of 22 students in the top ten. Another thing important to note is that the Davis Middle School chapter performed better at NLC than any other school in the state of Michigan.

The ML club had three teams place second in the nation. Congratulations to the Introduction to Video Production team of Kate Nolan ‘25, Alexis Panik ‘25, Kennadi Smith ‘27, and Maddy Wilson ‘27; the Website Design team of  Bryn Adams ‘26, Melody Gigowski ‘25, Alivia Martin ‘28, and Grace Yager ‘26,  and the Digital Game Design team of Landon York ‘26 and Logan Youngman ‘27.

The Introduction to Video Production team of Claire Flannery ‘27, Emma Hawkins ‘25, Jillian Monahan ‘25, and Susan Petersen ‘27 placed third in the nation.  Kate Nolan ‘25 placed fifth in Entrepreneurship Exploration, the other Digital Game Design team of Logan Bayer ‘25 and John Petersen ‘25 had to compete without two of their teammates due to quarantine and ended up placing 6th in the nation despite this setback. The other Website Design team of Quinn Ortiz ‘25, Ava Ruley ‘25, and Kassidy Hassenzahl ‘25 placed 7th; in addition, Ava Ruley placed 8th in her prepared speech event. Eighth grader Abby Nolan placed 8th in the brand- new Human Resource Exploration event and seventh grader Noah Widman placed 9th in Graphic Design Promotion.

The high school and middle school teams and advisors celebrated with a pizza party on Saturday, May 8th, as they watched the awards show live.  BPA used new technology so the students could join a Zoom room and were able to be on camera for the presentation.  Awards will be mailed to schools and distributed at a later date.

The Business Professionals of America Torch Awards Program is designed to promote professionalism and leadership in both career development and personal growth. Students complete activities in the seven Torch categories: Leadership, Service, Cooperation, Knowledge, Friendship, Love, Hope, Faith, and Patriotism – then log their activities in an online Torch Résumé. Awarded at the national level, the Ambassador Torch Award requires 70 points in each Torch category. An Ambassador level status is defined as “a diplomatic official of the highest rank appointed and accredited as a representative of the organization.”  Three seniors earned this distinction at the National Leadership Conference; congratulations to Brylee Boyd, Hailey Granata, and Grace Shreffler.

Business Professionals of America is full of bright, young people wishing to enter a business professional career.  This beneficial organization is helping our youth to have a brighter future.  The BPA Clubs are coached by Lauren Cornett, Mindy Eggleston, Sarah Sutliff, and Laura Wilson.
